April Report

April’s poetry meeting was well attended despite the inclement weather. The savories were very tasty and the beverages went down well. We had several new attendees’ to look, listen and even to learn. The biggest treat of the day was when the lovely Irene recited a poem for the first time in her life and it was the first time she has ever spoken publicly, maybe we have awoken a sleeping monster or a hidden talent as Irene was very apt at the task and completed the task like a pro, well done my love. My three poems were written yesterday and went over well. Bob was his usual mischievous best and got off to a good start with a funny little ditty, he then declared he had the right to be a fool as often as he chooses. He gave us an enlightening tale of the after math of an IKEA purchase, a task not often repeated after the first time purchaser assembles an incomplete project; in his next life Bob is going to run through it in reverse and is looking forward to coming to an end. Bob last words closed the day’s proceedings with a happy little tale about his Dad’s embarrassing day in hospital and drunkards struggle with a ghost. Katie, Roslyn and Betty Lou came along for the first time and enjoyed the day’s excellently wonderful variation, and high standard of poetry.
Eoin was flying today and even had a tune in his voice when he shared the story of can do Campbell and what he will do if we do what he says we can do, what he says he can do!!! Eoin’s second poem should be printed and passed around to all the shop assistants and his advice implanted as an employment guide. Roger returned from South Africa with an enthusiastic desire to learn more about the origins of man and the beginnings of Gods. His historical poem shed light into the birth of South Africa and its proud foundations. He brought back facts, figures, a great book and poem about the Stonehenge like construction in Transvaal. Roger recited Murray Hartins “Turbulence” and I followed it with Marco Gliori’s reply about the truth of that event; he then told a funny joke and closed with a poem about Willies willy.
Joan wrote on the optional monthly theme and reminded us all of how computers work, Joan used one of the great AB Patterson’s meters and the poem went across just right. Joan showed us that not all attempts at making and April Fool end with the right fool being revealed, well done Joan. Her final poem was like looking through a window into the NT where Joan lived for many years, originally against her Grandmother’s advice. Damien returned also this month and shared some advice that there is always somebody out there likes us, his second poem was a tribute to his Dad and that he really is a chip off the old block.
Jean had us confused about an April fool with a well written poem that revealed her naughty side and her misreading of a calendar that resulted in an overseas holiday. Jean also let us know in wonderful detail, how she feels about computers and her sentiments were well shared. Alex recited how he writes a poem depending on how the wind blows and then about his scenic journey through Cunningham’s Gap. He closed with advice on how to get things done and then he was very indifferent on what to do next and sort of gave up mid flight!! Trish revealed that she has left her mark in various car parks around the Gold Coast and that her car holds the proof. Trish then complained about how she is surrounded by crazy people and how hard it is to perfect in every way, but she copes and how she is now starting to doubt me; keep up the good work Trish.
Judi wrote on the theme as well and both her poems were on topic with her personal views on the inadequacies of technology and the origins of April Fool’s day, her poems were well written and everyone appreciated her talents again. Pat came along again and her poem was welcomed by all and brought a laugh to all with her comical history of her exploits with April foolery!! Our newest poet Paul made a big first impression with his ability to recite from memory and to recite so well, with tales from the Snowy River area and his first 17 wins on a 13 hand Snowy River horse. His second recitation was a wonderfully descriptive tale of life inside the Cooma woolsheds; I think we shall see a lot more of his talent in the months to come. Joyce and Mac made their regular appearance and Joyce wondered why only one day a year was set aside for fools when they occur on nearly every day of the year. Her second poem was airing her exasperation with computers and the appropriate language required to navigate your way around this dodgy technology.
Banjo has written another poem and this is becoming a regular occurrence despite his difficulty with the task, he let us know the way to impress him is to speak the truth and start with words from the heart. His rendition of ‘My Country’ was spot on and he shares Dorothea’s passion to the letter. Banjo then donned a mock dressing and told us the tale of the hapless labourer with the poor weights and measures skills and his reasons for not going to work one day. Sandra told us how she is looking forward to her impending trip to France and Italy and shared some of her expectations of what she will see when she travels around there. Sue popped in for a quick visit and left early after leaving a smile on everyone’s face with her limerick. Vincent made a really spectacular late entry but then he shared his experience as an Aubergine on death row and told of his lucky escape; he then squeaked about the Willy Wag Tail and squawked its plight. Marta also shared a limerick and made us all smile; I thanked her for her gift of a lovely hand painted Easter Egg to all the Poets of Paradise. Kathy just managed to sneak in at the end of the day and gave us a wonderful poem about the gremlins that live inside her laptop and I know they must be the same ones that go online and enter my laptop also.
All in all we had a great afternoon and everyone stayed around to finish off the goodies, we all agreed that the diversity of the poems and the efforts of the poets is making for a wonderful enjoyable monthly afternoon that we are all proud of and look forward to with eagerness. See you next month where the best TV Mum will be revealed and you will discover what my parents always told me. Thank you from Jeff Irene and all the poets.
